The Benefits of CBD in Pain Management in 2021

The cannabis Sativa plant has garnered a hefty amount of attention in the last several years as more and more evidence of potential benefits to users comes to light about the natural weed plant. Did you know that the Chinese book Pharmacopoeia documented cannabis as a plant that treats pain and gout? And this was somewhere around the year 3000bc. Looks to me like we’re still playing catch-up.

CBD has been known and used as a treatment for:

  • Anxiety
  • AIDS/HIV
  • Cancer
  • Seizures
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • PTSD
  • Arthritis
  • Depression
  • Chronic Pain
  • MS Pain
  • Glaucoma
  • Muscle Pain
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Acne

Shifting Perception

In the United States, the CBD based medicine Epidiolex has recently been approved for medicinal use by the Food and Drug Administration. This is a big deal for two reasons, one, Epidiolex has been successful in the assistance of treating Dravet Syndrome to reduce seizures in patients who sometimes can endure hundreds of seizures a day, and two, cannabis is still considered a Schedule 1 drug that is abused by users and doesn’t have medicinal qualities.

The two major, and most often spoken about, components of cannabis are Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and if you’ve heard talk of CBD or cannabis at all, it’s likely you’ve heard those acronyms before. The odd thing about both of those cannabinoids? Both have been reported to offer medical benefits such as being neuro-protectant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic, as well as treating the issues we discussed above. It’s clear to see that the ‘War on Drugs’ has painted cannabis in a bad light, despite its confirmation of being non-addictive and non-toxic and a natural growing plant with medicinal uses.

Pain is often associated with many ailments and diseases. This unpleasant side effect ranges from joint pain, back pain, headaches or migraines, limb pain, and overall discomfort of the body. Cannabis has proven to help alleviate these issues by being a tremendous pain management option for those who suffer from such afflictions.

Cannabis connects to our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) which makes up our immune and nervous systems. Little receptors found within nervous and immune systems bind cannabinoid found within Sativa plants. The CBI and CB2 receptors, powered by cannabinoids, serve an integral function in our bodies. We naturally produce endocannabinoids, a form of cannabinoid, and when the delivery of cannabinoids is increased, our body’s natural process of producing internal cannabinoids increases.

Did you know that the human body naturally produces something called anandamide? Dubbed the ‘bliss molecule’ because of its part played in producing feelings of joy or happiness, anandamide is an essential component of the human body. CBD and THC, natural components of cannabis, can work as supplements for the body in producing anandamide. Due to being a natural anti-inflammatory, CBD works in tandem with the ECS to lessen pain and reduce inflammation.

The positive effects of cannabis on the human body are well documented, and more ways that cannabis medicinally aids the body are being discovered as new studies become less frowned upon and more people become open to the idea of cannabis as a medical benefit.
